Why it exists.
The beginning
Chypre Fulminare landed in 2022, the work of perfumer John Stephen for Naughton & Wilson. The composition delivers on its name's implication with classical grammar, stacking citrus over a chypre spine built from dark, resinous materials. This is a chypre built to the old blueprint, with the depth that makes the genre endure. The opening is bright and sharp, lemon and lime carrying a clean tartness, softened slightly by orange and the dense tropical sweetness of ylang-ylang underneath. There is nothing tentative about how the top presents itself, and that confidence sets the tone for everything that follows. It feels like a deliberate composition from the first spray, every note placed with intention rather than scattered across the skin at random.
What makes Fulminare work is how seriously it takes the dark materials. The leather and frankincense in the heart are not a polite suggestion. They arrive with weight, backed by black pepper that cuts through the sweetness of the ylang-ylang. The base goes deeper still, into oakmoss, castoreum, ambergris, labdanum, and vetiver. The evolution
