The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Bloody Mary arrived in 2022 as a collaboration between Indonesian fragrance house Mykonos and Nessie Judge, an Indonesian creator known for horror and mystery storytelling. The concept rejects sugary florals in favor of a darker register built on spices, woods, and an unusual paper accord that reads like a story left unfinished. That paper note is the hinge of the entire composition, a material that almost no mainstream perfumer reaches for, and one that demands careful handling to avoid smelling like cardboard or old newspaper. Mykonos treats it instead as a narrative device, something that suggests absence rather than presence, the ghost of ink on a page rather than the page itself.
The most unexpected material here is paper. It gains warmth and texture when paired with saffron and Damask rose in the heart, reading more like aged letters than a bookshop. The birch wood in the base anchors the composition in something tactile and ancient, a smoked, almost tarred quality that suggests something left to cure in a closed room. Damask rose appears in both the top and heart, acting as a thread that ties the spices to the smoky drydown.
The evolution
The first 15 minutes are the loudest. Pink pepper and cardamom prick the air with a dry, almost peppery heat, while Damask rose threads through like a memory someone interrupts. Then the paper arrives, and the whole composition shifts registers. The florals recede. The saffron deepens into something mineral, almost metallic, like ink drying on a page. Waxed wood in the heart adds a hushed resinous quality, warmth that doesn't announce itself so much as accumulate in the background. After two hours, birch wood takes command. Its character is subtle, more worn saddle than new jacket, and it wraps around sandalwood and amber like smoke settling into fabric. The musk in the base keeps everything close to skin, which is where this fragrance prefers to live. On a sweater the next morning, it reads as faint smoke and warm wood, a ghost of the previous night.
Cultural impact
Bloody Mary is a collaboration between Mykonos and Nessie Judge, a creator rooted in horror and mystery storytelling whose audience overlaps with fragrance enthusiasts in ways that few content creators achieve. The partnership brings a narrative sensibility to the composition, grounding what could have been a gimmick in genuine atmosphere. The fragrance positions itself in a space where storytelling and scent-making converge, a category that remains largely unexplored in the Indonesian market. It wears like a scent for someone who reads by lamplight, and the collaboration with Judge gives that impression a specific weight.
