The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Purple Royale arrived in 2023 as Mother of Pearl's exploration of colour made tangible. Perfumer Carine Certain Boin approached the brief with the house's signature marine-inspired artistry, translating the idea of purple's opalescent shimmer into scent. Her challenge was to capture how that colour shifts between light and dark, translating the concept of personal light into a fragrance that moves through distinct emotional registers on skin, from bright citrus to deep florals to warm woods.
For Carine Certain Boin, each note in Purple Royale serves a specific purpose in this colour story. The bergamot and pear create the lightness of violet's edge, the florals represent purple's depth and romance, and the woody-musky-vanilla base mirrors how purple absorbs warmth at dusk. The gourmand accord bridges these worlds, making the transition feel natural rather than jarring. This careful layering means Purple Royale rewards patience, revealing new facets as it wears and inviting the wearer to experience colour through smell.
The evolution
The scent journey of Purple Royale follows the arc of purple itself, moving from light to deep to luminous. It opens with bergamot's sparkling citrus clarity and pear's crisp, fruity brightness, accented by a whisper of rose. The heart deepens into peony's lush floral richness, heliotrope's powdery warmth, and lily of the valley's fresh, green clarity, with a gourmand accord adding edible depth. The drydown anchors everything in cedarwood's clean woody presence, musks intimate closeness, sandalwood's creamy warmth, and vanilla's long-lasting sweetness, creating a finish that feels both grounded and delicate.
Cultural impact
Part of Mother of Pearl’s Floral Series, Purple Royale is described as a seductive feminine fragrance with dark, intense woody notes. Its gourmand‑fruity‑floral character places it alongside peers like Savage Vanilla (2023), offering a sweet‑vanilla base that appeals to those who enjoy layered, evolving scents without overwhelming projection.
