The beginning
Oudrising arrived in 2020 from Montale, and this composition doesn't hedge on the promise behind the name. Leather, smoke, spice, and oud arrive stacked, the kind of density that says the wearer picked it on purpose, not by accident. The opening has that raw-hide edge sharpened by black pepper, a quick flash of citrus from grapefruit and bergamot that disappears almost before you register it. Black tea in the heart does something quieter, a tannic edge that keeps the richness from tipping into sweetness. Labdanum adds an amber warmth underneath, and the whole thing settles into a hum of resinous smoke and dry wood. It's a fragrance that knows exactly what it wants to be, and waits for you to keep up.
What makes Oudrising worth a second look is how it balances intensity against a few unexpected shapes. Black tea sits in the heart, lending a dry, astringent bite that gives the composition a clear spine. Tobacco and incense share the base with cedarwood and sandalwood, which means the drydown leans woody-resinous rather than syrupy. Labdanum in the heart adds amber warmth while reinforcing the leather's animal edge, and the woods underneath carry the smoke without letting it dominate.
The evolution
The first thirty minutes are all friction. Grapefruit and bergamot flash briefly, but black pepper and leather push through fast, and the opening reads as raw hide under low amber light. The smoke builds within the first hour, incense threading through the leather until the whole thing smells like a room that was just left. By the second hour, the heart settles: oud and patchouli take the lead, jasmine and rose soften the edges without sweetening them, and black tea cuts a dry line through the middle. This is where Oudrising stops shouting and starts speaking. The drydown is where it earns its reputation. Tobacco and incense settle into cedarwood and sandalwood, amber and vanilla warm the base, and musk smooths everything into a single, continuous hum.
