The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The Collection Matières: Les Éléments is Molinard's study of raw materials, each fragrance built around a single ingredient, an exercise in restraint and focus. Vétiver arrived in 2021 as the house's declaration on a classic note that has long held an important place in perfumery. The honest work of taking Java vetiver oil and giving it the space to be exactly what it is. The citrus opens bright and immediate, bringing clarity to the composition. The heart adds dimension with elegant florals that cool and soften the opening. The base is where the story lives, revealing the vetiver's full character as it settles into a quiet, persistent drydown.
What makes this composition distinctive is the restraint around the vetiver itself. Vetiver is often used as a supporting player, a base note that grounds flashier materials. Here it sits at the center, unapologetic. The iris in the heart adds a powdery elegance that feels distinctly French, cool, slightly floral, the kind of restraint that reads as sophistication rather than distance. The lavender bridges the gap between the bright citrus opening and the earthy base, giving the fragrance a coherent arc from top to bottom.
The evolution
The opening arrives crisp and immediate. Blood orange and grapefruit hit first, juicy, slightly tart, the kind of brightness that reads as morning rather than synthetic. Bergamot adds a cleaner citrus layer underneath. The citrus remains bright, though it gradually gives way as the heart begins to assert itself. Lavender and iris take over next, shifting the character from bright to cool. The lavender brings an aromatic, slightly herbal quality that keeps things grounded. The iris adds powder, soft, slightly floral, the scent of old books and good light. Amber threads through, warming the florals without sweetening them. This phase carries the fragrance longest, evolving slowly as the top notes fade. The drydown is where Java vetiver finally gets its turn. The citrus is gone. The florals fade to a whisper. What remains is root, dark, earthy, with an earthy mineral quality.
Cultural impact
Molinard stands as one of the oldest perfume houses still in operation, a testament to enduring craft and consistent vision. The Collection Matières series, of which Vétiver is a part, reflects a return to perfumery fundamentals, compositions that focus intently on individual materials. This approach invites a closer look at what each ingredient can offer on its own terms, stripping away layers to reveal essential character. The 2021 release arrived during renewed interest in classic materials, with vetiver taking center stage as a versatile anchor for modern compositions.
