The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Memo Paris treats fragrance as a travel note, a way to preserve and relive the memory of a destination long after departure. The house builds each scent around a place that moved them, translating geography and emotion into liquid form. Their perfume Ithaque by Memo Paris draws from Ithaca, the island Homer made the end of every voyage and the beginning of every journey that mattered. In creating this fragrance, perfumer Marypierre Julien translated the experience of being at sea and the anticipation of return into scent, using bitter orange and bergamot to capture bright coastal light and Sichuan pepper to evoke the clean sting of open air. Blackcurrant and jasmine bring an unexpected fruit-forward elegance to the heart, reflecting the richness of memory itself, while cedarwood and patchouli ground the composition in the worn wood of a boat returning home.
The note selection for Ithaque is deliberate in its tension. Bitter orange and bergamot establish immediate brightness, the kind of light you feel at dawn on open water. Juniper and Sichuan pepper introduce a crisp, tingly energy that feels maritime without relying on typical aquatic accords, grounding the scent in the physical sensation of sea air and sharp coastal wind. Blackcurrant in the heart provides a tart counterpoint, preventing the fragrance from becoming purely clean or fresh, and its jammy quality adds a layer of memory and warmth.
The evolution
Ithaque begins its journey with a sharp, effervescent burst of bitter orange and bergamot that reads like sunlight over water. Juniper berry adds a cool, almost alpine crispness that immediately sets the scent apart from anything sweet or tropical. The Nepalese Sichuan pepper absolute introduces a tingly, clean spice that feels bracing and slightly marine, a clever move that nods to the sea without using any aquatic note. Cinnamon provides subtle warmth beneath the surface, preventing the opening from feeling too sharp. As time passes, blackcurrant takes center stage, its tart, jammy character bringing an almost unexpected brightness that contrasts sharply with the cool opening. Jasmine softens the fruit with a creamy, slightly heady floral presence that elevates the heart into something genuinely elegant. Cedarwood and patchouli arrive in the drydown as quiet anchors, the cedar offering dry, coastal woodiness and patchouli delivering earthy mineral depth that lingers long after the citrus has faded.
Cultural impact
Ithaque sits in the Graines Vagabondes collection, a bright and citrus-forward fragrance that invites comparison to popular fresh fragrances, but with an unusual blackcurrant-jasmine heart that keeps it from feeling generic. The 2023 launch brought a composition that balances structure with an approachable character. Respected by enthusiasts for its honest construction and the way it evolves on the skin, it maintains a loyal following among those who appreciate Memo Paris's destination-driven storytelling. The scent rewards patience, revealing new facets as the hours pass, and stays present without overwhelming.
