The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The name arrives before the scent does, You're So Vain, a provocation in two words. Luca Gritti built this fragrance in 2022 as part of the Ivy collection, and the title isn't accidental. It borrows from Carly Simon's 1973 accusation-turned-anthem, the one where vanity becomes a kind of honesty. The composition opens with Italian grapefruit and lemon, bright and sharp, before blackcurrant takes over with darker, wine-like depth. Blond tobacco serves as a quiet pivot point, and the drydown settles into oakmoss and patchouli.
The structure does the work. Italian grapefruit and lemon open bright and sharp, a confident start. Then blackcurrant takes over, darker than most fruity accords dare to go. The red fruits add juiciness without tipping into dessert territory. Blond tobacco is the quiet pivot point that bridges the brighter opening to the deeper base notes. By the time oakmoss and patchouli arrive, the fragrance has moved from crisp citrus to earthy depth.
The evolution
The opening hits fast, grapefruit and lemon arrive together, sharp and immediate. Within the first phase the blackcurrant thickens, pushing the citrus toward something rounder, almost wine-like. The tobacco appears as a smoothing agent, keeping the berry from becoming too sweet. As the composition settles, mossy and earthy notes take over, creating an intimate drydown. The blend moves from bright citrus through dark fruit to a grounded, classic base.
Cultural impact
You're So Vain sits in a specific space: fruity enough to attract, chypre enough to divide. The blackcurrant-forward composition places it alongside champagnes and bold interpretations that use wine-like depth as a signature. On skin, the fragrance opens with bright citrus before settling into darker fruit and earthy base notes.
