The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Memo Paris was founded in 2007 by Clara Molloy, a Parisian poet, and John Molloy, an Irish traveler who met on a chairlift and decided that memory was the truest luxury. Their philosophy has never been about abstractions. Each fragrance begins with a place, specific coordinates on the globe that the founders actually visited and couldn't stop thinking about. For Ilha do Mel, that place is a stretch of Brazilian coastline known as Honey Island, a destination that burned itself into their collective memory. Aliénor Massenet translated this coastal obsession into liquid form, building from bright citrus and gardenia through lush florals to a warm, resinous base that captures the island's golden-hour glow.
The note selection for Ilha do Mel reflects Memo Paris's commitment to olfactory memory as a creative framework. The opening gardenia and bergamot evoke sun-warmed petals caught in coastal breezes. The heart's white florals, particularly jasmine and orange blossom, capture the intoxicating scent of tropical blossoms in full bloom. Broom and narcissus add complexity drawn from the island's wilder flora. Cypriol, with its earthy smoky character, grounds the composition in a sense of place. The drydown's orris, benzoin, and vanilla create a honeyed warmth that pays homage to the island's name while providing the lasting comfort that makes this fragrance memorable.
The evolution
The opening burst of bergamot and juniper berry immediately signals a departure from typical beach florals. Gardenia arrives quickly, its creamy presence tempering the juniper's cool edge. This interplay between bright citrus and lush white flowers sets the tone for what follows. As the heart develops, jasmine and orange blossom take center stage, their indolic warmth balanced by broom's hay-like quality and narcissus's green depth. Cypriol adds an unexpected earthy-smoky dimension that speaks to wild coastal vegetation rather than manicured gardens. The drydown brings a satisfying shift toward warmth: orris root provides powdery softness, benzoin contributes resinous sweetness, and vanilla creates a creamy finish that extends the island's honeyed promise.
Cultural impact
Ilha do Mel sits within the Fleurs Bohèmes collection, a Memo Paris line that celebrates flowers with a bohemian spirit, unapologetically beautiful, with an edge. The fragrance has found its audience among wearers who appreciate white florals but find most offerings too polite or too sunscreen-adjacent. The broom absolute keeps it grounded, the honey note keeps it warm, and the orris root drydown keeps it memorable.
