The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Cacao In The Sun takes its name from the simplest pleasure, the warmth of cocoa warmed by direct light. Perfumer Lucien Ferrero built this 2022 release around a different reading of cacao, one rooted in brightness rather than depth. This one chases sunlight. The goal was something that felt like a holiday, not a pantry, the scent memory of afternoon warmth on bare skin, carried on a breeze that smells faintly of fruit. The opening bursts with golden warmth, cocoa powder dusted with citrus zest, as if someone left a chocolate bar out on a sun-drenched terrace.
The structure reverses expectations. Most cacao fragrances begin dark and gradually soften. Cacao In The Sun does the opposite, blackcurrant and lemon arrive first, cutting through with an almost sparkling brightness before the chocolate has even introduced itself. When the cacao does appear, it's softened immediately by orange blossom and iris, creating a powdery warmth rather than a rich one. The result is an ingredient that's recognizable but entirely reframed, familiar yet surprising, like hearing a beloved song in a higher key.
The evolution
The first ten minutes announce themselves immediately, blackcurrant arrives sharp and juicy, lemon follows with crisp citrus that cuts through before it can sweeten. The rose sits beneath, barely visible, lending the top a subtle softness even as the fruits dominate. As the composition progresses, the citrus begins to fade and chocolate emerges, softened by orange blossom and iris. This middle phase is powdery and intimate, a warm floral fog rather than anything sharp or distinct. The lily of the valley adds a clean, almost soapy quality that keeps the heart from feeling heavy. The drydown reveals itself gradually as the earlier notes recede. Vanilla and sandalwood settle into the skin, musk adding a quiet warmth that stays close. On fabric, the scent fades to a soft cocoa-vanilla whisper, present enough to notice if someone leans in, gone by morning.
Cultural impact
Maison Tahité has carved a distinctive space for the house, offering a fresh take on chocolate in perfumery. Rather than relying on heavy oriental structures or the smoky depths often associated with cacao, these fragrances approach the ingredient with lightness and clarity. Each scent builds around a single aspect of chocolate, whether that is its powdery warmth, its bitter edge, or its subtle sweetness. The collection appeals to those who appreciate the idea of cocoa in a composition but want something that feels modern and effortless rather than dense or traditional.
