The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Keep It Fluffy originally launched under Lush's former sister brand B Never Too Busy to Be Beautiful in 2004, returning to the main Lush line in 2021. The relaunch brought it back into the fold under the same roof where Mark Constantine has spent decades building scent as a form of quiet resistance, products made from fresh ingredients, ethical sourcing, and the belief that smelling good shouldn't require compromise. For Constantine, this one has always been about softness as a statement: what happens when you strip away the performance and just let a fragrance be gentle?
The Pakistani rose absolute and vanilla absolute form the gravitational center here. Both materials carry natural sweetness, but where rose can skew sharp and green, the absolute version softens into something almost edible. Vanilla absolute is heavier than its synthetic counterpart, it brings texture, a faint smoky warmth that prevents the whole composition from feeling like pure sugar. Ylang-ylang is the bridge: heady enough to signal floral, but rounded enough to keep the edges from cutting. Orris root is the quiet workhorse, lending that powdery iris quality that makes the drydown feel finished rather than faded.
The evolution
The opening hits with a immediate hit of rose and ylang-ylang, bright, almost juicy. Within twenty minutes, the jasmine absolute arrives, pushing the florals deeper into creamy territory. The lemongrass that opens on some skin types reads as a fleeting green note, a brief herbal whisper before the composition settles. By the second hour, the vanilla has taken over the foreground, but it's held in check by the orris root, which keeps everything powdery and composed. The musk base emerges around hour three, and that's where Keep It Fluffy becomes truly intimate, close to the skin, warm, the kind of scent you catch when you press your wrist to your neck. It lasts six to eight hours on most skin, fading into a soft vanilla-powder trail that stays until you wash it off.
Cultural impact
Keep It Fluffy occupies a specific niche in the Lush lineup: the fragrance for people who want warmth without drama. It has no structural pretense, no animalic kick, no smoke or spice to prove anything. In a brand known for provocative names and confrontational compositions, Dirty, Lord of Misrule, Lust, Keep It Fluffy is the soft answer. It speaks to the side of the brand that believes self-care can be gentle and still matter.
