The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Vetiver has been in Lorenzo Villoresi's lineup since 1994. The 2014 Vintage Collection release is a refined revision of that original, a chance to sharpen what worked and deepen what didn't. The call to revisit came from the house's own archives: Villoresi's atelier in Florence holds decades of formulation notes, and revisiting an early success through more experienced hands is part of how the brand operates. The goal wasn't reinvention. It was clarification.
The key material is Bourbon vetiver sourced from Indonesia and La Réunion, tropical forests yielding a root with bitter, green, sensually smoky character. No synthetic approximation can replicate the mineral depth of real vetiver absolute. The decision to use it generously, rather than as an accent, defines this composition. The celery note in the heart is the quiet differentiator, herbal and slightly saline, it prevents the green notes from feeling crisp or soapy, giving the middle stage an unusual density without heaviness. Galbanum adds bitter lift to the opening. Rosewood threads through the base.
The evolution
Bergamot and petitgrain arrive first, bright citrus with a faintly floral undertone. The opening is clean, almost soapy, before the green notes arrive. Galbanum brings bitter herbaceousness. Lavender lingers in the background, aromatic and familiar. This opening lasts about 30 minutes. Then the heart: celery, nutmeg, sage. The celery is the strange part, herbal and slightly saline, like crushed leaves, not vegetable. Nutmeg and sage add warmth and earth. Neroli keeps the transition refined. The heart holds for roughly an hour before the base takes over. Vetiver dominates the drydown. Bourbon vetiver from Indonesia and La Réunion: smoky, bitter, mineral, with that characteristic earthy root quality. Oakmoss deepens the forest-floor impression. Cedar and sandalwood add woody warmth. Patchouli lingers quietly. Six to eight hours later, the vetiver is still there, dry, mineral, intimate. This is a fragrance that doesn't fade so much as settle.
Cultural impact
The Vintage Collection presents refined, natural-forward compositions rooted in the house's 25-year history. Vetiver stands as one of the brand's reference points, a 1994 original, revised and clarified in 2014. The house occupies a particular space: Florentine heritage without nostalgia, aromatic complexity without noise. Those seeking that register tend to arrive through word of mouth or niche fragrance communities. This fragrance is for them.
