The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Arnaud Poulain designed Néroli Supercritique as part of Les EAUX Primordiales' Supercritique collection, a series dedicated to the emblematic flowers of high perfumery. The house turned its attention to neroli, a flower beloved for centuries yet rarely given this level of focus. The name signals ambition: a neroli that transcends the expected. In the opening, bright citrus and aldehydic sparkle announce themselves with crystalline clarity. As the top notes settle, the neroli emerges slowly, revealing layers of creamy, sun-drenched petals that feel both intimate and expansive. The floral heart unfolds with richness and warmth, suggesting the experience of standing in an orange grove at the height of bloom.
What sets Néroli Supercritique apart is the tension between its top and heart notes. Bergamot and mandarin orange arrive sparkling, lifted by aldehydes that give the opening a crystalline quality. The citrus presence is immediate and vivid, a bright flash of tart fruit suspended in light. But beneath that brilliance, the neroli and orange blossom are already waiting, their creamy, sun-warmed character ready to take over. The transition is seamless, the citrus giving way without sharp edges to something deeper and more enveloping.
The evolution
The opening arrives quickly, aldehydes lifting the bergamot and mandarin into the air in a bright, almost sparkling first impression. The citrus clarity is pronounced, a vivid burst of tart fruit and effervescent light. As the scent develops, the neroli and orange blossom begin to take over, and the composition shifts from citrus brightness to warm floral richness. The jasmine arrives with subtle indolic depth that rounds the heart without weighing it down, adding a nocturnal quality that contrasts with the initial sparkle. Petitgrain threads through the middle, its green, slightly bitter character serving as a reminder of the botanical origins, keeping the florals honest and grounded. As time passes, the composition begins to soften. The florals settle into the skin, and the vanilla, present but never dominant, begins to emerge, smoothing everything into a warm, creamy drydown.
Cultural impact
The Supercritique collection represents a serious engagement with classical perfumery materials. Néroli Supercritique joins a tradition of white floral compositions that demonstrate technical precision and a distinctive point of view. The fragrance presents a neroli that is warm, creamy, and unapologetically floral, qualities that distinguish it within the niche category. Its approachability makes it accessible to those new to concentrated perfumery, while its complexity rewards continued wearing. The balance between bright citrus opening and rich floral heart creates a versatile composition that reads as both sophisticated and inviting.
