The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Rose Supercritique arrived in 2018 as the inaugural scent of Les Eaux Primordiales' Supercritique collection, marking the house's entry into a new era of botanical extraction. Perfumer Arnaud Poulain approached the project with a scientist's curiosity and an artist's ambition, seeking to extract the true essence of rose without the extraction artifacts that often accompany traditional methods. The supercritical carbon dioxide process he employed captures the volatile aromatic compounds with unusual precision, allowing the rose to express itself with crystalline clarity. This technical foundation became the perfumer's canvas for building something that would challenge expectations about what a rose fragrance could be.
The supercritical extraction method used for Rose Supercritique represents more than a technical novelty; it reflects Les Eaux Primordiales' philosophy that the finest materials, processed with scientific precision, yield the most truthful scents. Rose, incense and myrrh are ancient materials with deep ritual significance, and pairing them with the modern precision of supercritical extraction creates a tension between the primal and the analytical. Cardamom and blackcurrant were chosen to support this vision, their spiced warmth and wine-dark depth preventing the rose from becoming purely decorative.
The evolution
The fragrance begins its evolution with the lively tartness of red berries and the clean citrus of bergamot, a sparkling prelude that refuses to be merely decorative. As this brightness integrates, the heart reveals its true character: a rose so richly rendered it feels almost physical, its petals heavy with scent. Cardamom introduces an aromatic warmth that lifts the florality into spiced territory, while blackcurrant adds a dark, wine-like depth that suggests something ancient and ceremonial. The drydown marks a dramatic shift toward contemplation as incense smoke curls through the composition, met by the balsamic depth of myrrh. Ambroxan provides a warm, almost skin-like amber finish that allows the fragrance to linger as a quiet presence rather than a declaration.
Cultural impact
Since its 2018 debut, Rose Supercritique has been praised for turning the classic rose into an oriental, smoky narrative. Critics note its bold blend of red berries and incense sets it apart from typical fresh rose offerings, earning it a reputation as a daring reinterpretation that appeals to collectors seeking depth over simplicity.
