The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
L'Erbolario was founded in 1978 in Lodi, Italy, where the brand grew from a herbalist shop into a fragrance house that honors botanical tradition. Sandalo takes its name from the Italian word for sandalwood, yet the actual composition speaks a different dialect entirely, translating the concept of aromatic wood forests into a modern unisex statement. Inspired by L'Erbolario's roots in that 1978 herbal shop, the creators wanted a fragrance that honored their connection to plants and natural materials without relying on actual sandalwood. Cedarwood and Patchouli connect the fragrance to the herbal lineage, while Fir Resin and Clary Sage evoke the feeling of standing in a coniferous forest. The complexity builds through unusual choices in the drydown, where Malt and Frankincense suggest warmth and ceremony rather than simple woody comfort. This is a fragrance that respects tradition while pursuing something genuinely distinctive.
The note selection reflects L'Erbolario's philosophy of working with botanical materials in unconventional ways. Rather than using actual sandalwood, the perfumers built a woody-smoky character through Cedarwood, Vetiver, and the resinous trio of Frankincense, Labdanum, and Myrrh. These materials were chosen for their ability to create depth and incense-like quality without relying on the tropical wood the name suggests. Jasmine introduces floral warmth in the heart, preventing the aromatic notes from overwhelming. Clary Sage and Cinnamon add complexity throughout the heart phase, making it a true development rather than a simple transition.
The evolution
The opening sets a crisp, aromatic tone with Cedarwood, Patchouli, Lemon, and Lime working in concert. The citrus notes provide unexpected brightness before the deeper forest elements arrive. Fifteen minutes in, the heart phase introduces Fir Resin as a dominant presence, its coniferous density establishing the forest fantasy that the name promises. Jasmine adds warmth to prevent this from reading as purely coniferous, while Cinnamon provides occasional spicy pulses that catch attention. Clary Sage contributes bitter aromatic nuance, rounding out a heart that functions as an aromatic bridge between the fresh opening and the contemplative base. The drydown marks a true departure from expectations, where Malt introduces grainy sweetness that softens the darkness gathering in the base. Frankincense and Labdanum combine into a heavy resinous cloud, with Labdanum providing the particularly heavy, balsamic weight. Myrrh adds dark, tar-like bitterness. Vetiver grounds this entire structure in smoky, earthy wood, producing a finish that feels ceremonial and contemplative.
Cultural impact
Sandalo has become a quiet favorite among those who appreciate a balanced, unisex woody‑spicy scent. Wearers often note its ability to transition from a bright daytime vibe to a warm, smoky evening aura, making it a versatile choice for both casual outings and formal events. Its aromatic profile places it alongside classic sandalwood‑centric fragrances while retaining L'Erbolario’s distinctive herbal edge.
