The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
In 2018, Joop! released Wow! for Women as a companion to the original Wow! fragrance from 2017. Perfumer Fabrice Pellegrin was tasked with creating something distinctive, unexpected, and bold, a feminine composition that retained the house's expressive DNA while introducing something new. The concept arrived fully formed: a femme fatale fragrance for a woman who knows exactly what she wants. The campaign, shot by French director Olivier Dahan and photographer Vincent Peters, featured Milla Jovovich alongside a white panther, imagery that reinforced the message. This was seduction without apology. The fragrance that carried it arrived in a deep burgundy flacon, identical in shape to its masculine counterpart but unmistakably its own.
The note structure is where Wow! for Women earns its reputation. Forest raspberry and rhubarb open bright and tart, not the polished fruitiness of a safe mainstream flanker, but something with actual acid. Red rose absolute and peony form the heart, and here the composition makes its first commitment: this is rose-forward in a way that demands attention, not rose-adjacent for marketing purposes. Patchouli, cetalox, and white musk form the base, and that patchouli presence is the tell. It's not the patchouli of earthy naturals or clean woody compositions, it's warm, slightly sweet, and unapologetically present in the drydown.
The evolution
The opening hits immediately, forest raspberry and rhubarb create a tart, almost sparkling effect. The raspberry reads fresh and bright, the rhubarb adds a green, slightly bitter edge that prevents the opening from becoming simply sweet. Thirty minutes in, the rose absolute arrives in the heart and the composition shifts. The raspberry retreats but doesn't disappear. Peony appears alongside the rose, softening what could have been a sharp floral moment into something richer and more layered. This is the fragrance's most public phase, the one that announces itself in a room. The drydown is where Wow! for Women settles into its actual character. Patchouli and cetalox take over, white musk adds a clean but persistent warmth. The rose lingers underneath, not fading but deepening into something more resinous. On most skin types, this phase carries for 6-8 hours, close to the skin after the first two, present and warm for most of a workday. On fabric, the drydown can last into the following day.
Cultural impact
Wow! for Women arrived in 2018 as a confident counterpoint to the original Wow! fragrance, positioning itself squarely within Joop!'s tradition of bold, expressive compositions. The campaign featuring Milla Jovovich reinforced the house's intent: this was a fragrance for a woman who didn't need permission. Within the house's catalog, it represents a deliberate choice to prioritize presence over politeness. The femme fatale framing was not accidental, it was the brief. Wearers who connect with Wow! for Women tend to describe it as the scent of someone who walks into a room and doesn't need to announce themselves.
