The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
HUAN YI is a Chinese word built from two characters, the first meaning joy and the second pointing toward Italy. It's not a translation so much as a fusion, a single word where delight and its place of origin become the same thing. Jijide launched the fragrance in 2021 under their Collezione Personalità, commissioning perfumer Maurizio Cerizza to compose the scent. The name itself tells you almost everything you need to know before a single drop touches skin, and once it does, the juice makes good on the promise. Citrus oils lift off the top in a brisk, almost sparkling rush, carrying bergamot's clean bitterness and lemon's cheerful acidity into the air with little ceremony.
The answer turns out to involve neroli, maté, and a notably generous pour of Damask rose. Maté is the unusual suspect here, the herbal tea note that keeps the composition from tipping fully into confection. It adds a tannic, slightly smoky bitterness, the way a cup of green tea cuts through sweetness. Paired with iris, it gives the heart a structure most rose-led compositions skip. The base pulls toward vanilla and tonka, but guaiac wood and sandalwood keep that sweetness from going soft, grounding it with something that smells almost like pencil shavings.
The evolution
The opening is immediate: bergamot and neroli hit first, citrus-bright and almost bracing, the kind of spray that makes you blink. Within fifteen minutes, the fruits settle and the rose takes over, but it's not the rose you'd expect. There's an iris powderiness threaded through it that makes the whole thing feel slightly older, more considered, like a letter written on stationery. The maté is subtle but real, lending a dry, leafy quality that keeps the sweetness in check. Two hours in, the vanilla and tonka emerge from underneath, warming the composition without turning it into dessert. The sandalwood and guaiac wood arrive last, adding a soft woody backbone that lasts into the next morning. Sillage is moderate for the first hour, then draws close, settling into a skin scent that lingers on clothes and hair long after the skin has gone quiet.
Cultural impact
HUAN YI sits within Jijide's Collezione Personalità, and the citrus-rose structure suits warmer weather with a briskness that earns its place outside the usual lineup of straightforward fresh releases. The opening cuts through with a clean burst of bergamot and lemon, sharp enough to register on a warm day but never aggressive, and that brightness sets the stage for what follows without stealing focus from the heart. As the top notes settle, a rose accord emerges with a quality somewhere between fresh petals and something softly powdered, lending a roundness to the composition that keeps it from skewing too green or too soapy.
