The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Jacques Cavallier Belletrud designed Classique Love Actually as part of Jean Paul Gaultier's iconic Classique lineage. The Love Actually flanker takes a gentler approach than you might expect from the house, a floral composition that feels softer and more approachable than its predecessor. The name itself signals the shift: a fragrance designed for everyday wear, for moments that matter, for someone you want to remember. Where the original Classique made bold statements, this one speaks in quieter tones, offering tenderness without hesitation, intimacy without complication.
The structure opens bright with orange blossom and mandarin orange, star anise adding a distinctive spice that keeps things interesting. Pear and rose arrive to deepen the composition, giving it layers you notice the more you pay attention. The base is where it earns its keep, amber and musk and vanilla working together to create something powdery without being dusty, warm without being heavy. It's a fragrance that wears close to the skin, lingering in ways that feel personal rather than performative.
The evolution
The first spray opens with citrus brightness, orange blossom cutting clean, mandarin adding a rounder, sweeter edge. Star anise brings an unexpected twist that keeps the opening from being predictable. Within ten minutes, the florals arrive. Rose brings something elegant and soft, while pear keeps the transition feeling natural rather than abrupt. The hand-off to the base happens around the forty-minute mark, and this is where the fragrance settles into its true character. Vanilla arrives first, warm and close, settling in soft. Amber and musk follow, adding depth without competing for attention. On fabric, this fragrance outlasts most, you'll find it on a scarf the next morning, fainter but still present, still recognizable. On skin, the drydown holds close rather than projecting outward.
Cultural impact
Classique Love Actually occupies a specific position in the JPG lineup, softer than the original Classique, more intimate than you might expect from the house. Wearers tend to describe it as the fragrance of someone who doesn't need the room to know they're there. It's the scent people reach for when they want to feel put-together without announcing it, which makes it surprisingly versatile for a powdery floral. The moderate sillage works in its favor for close encounters; the longevity ensures it stays with you throughout the day.
