The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Jean Paul Gaultier built his fashion house on provocation and inclusivity, values that carried into his fragrance work. When Puig acquired the fragrance business in 2016, Daphné Bugey was tasked with reimagining Classique for the Essences de Parfum line, elevating concentration and complexity. Her approach honored the original's aldehydic-floral soul while deepening the drydown with modern gourmand elements. The result speaks to both longtime devotees and newcomers seeking something with real substance.
The note structure reflects a deliberate bridging of eras. Aldehydes recall perfumery's golden age, while Mandarin Orange and Ginger ground the opening in contemporary freshness. The heart leans into classic feminine florals, and the base's Whipped Cream, Vanilla, and Cashmere Wood represent a modern gourmand sensuality. These elements were chosen not for novelty but for how they amplify the original Classique's DNA while providing the longevity and sillage expected of a Parfum concentration.
The evolution
The fragrance opens with the crisp brightness of Mandarin Orange, softened immediately by the vintage grandeur of Aldehydes, while Ginger adds a subtle spicy counterpoint. Within minutes, the citrus fades and Orange Blossom dominates, its sweet, slightly indolic character softened by Jasmine's lush floral richness. As hours pass, the heart surrenders to the base, where Whipped Cream and Vanilla create a comforting gourmand sweetness, Benzoin adds resinous depth, and Cashmere Wood provides a silky, woody warmth that lingers on skin and fabric alike.
Cultural impact
Classique Essence de Parfum occupies a specific lane in modern perfumery, aldehydic florals with a gourmand base, warm enough to wear year-round but structured enough to command attention in cold weather. It has become theEssence that Gaultier fans reach for when they want the house's signature white floral-vanilla contrast at its most concentrated and intentional. For newcomers, it's a proof of concept: Gaultier does bold, sensual, body-positive fragrances like no one else. The aldehydic lift that defines the opening isn't just a vintage reference, it's what makes the vanilla feel lifted rather than cloying, and that's the signature move that keeps people coming back.
