The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
John Biebel conceived Gong in 2021 as a sonic-visual extension of his artistic practice with January Scent Project, the indie house he founded in Pawtucket, Rhode Island in 2015. Inspired by the resonant tones of Chinese gongs and the crisp snap of fresh citrus, he aimed to translate that rhythmic contrast into scent. The name evokes the percussive instrument, while the blend of lime and bergamot captures the initial strike, bright and commanding.
The green bell pepper and daikon radish in the heart were chosen to create a visceral, almost startling freshness that contrasts with the bright citrus opening and warm woody finish. Biebel treats these vegetable notes not as gimmicks but as legitimate aromatic materials, similar to how a chef might use a unexpected ingredient to elevate a dish. The ginger and galanga add an aromatic complexity that grounds the more eccentric elements, while the violet prevents the heart from becoming too austere. The drydown of musk, sandalwood, leather, and amber provides a comfortable landing, ensuring that the overall experience balances innovation with wearability.
The evolution
The opening of lime and bergamot delivers that initial percussive strike, a sharp citrus brightness that commands the space. As this fades, the heart unfolds with increasing complexity, green bell pepper and daikon radish bringing a vegetable-fresh quality that is genuinely unusual in perfumery. Blueberry adds a subtle fruity counterpoint while ginger and galanga introduce warm spice. Violet provides a delicate floral element that bridges the eccentricity of the vegetables with the sweetness of the fruit. The drydown transforms into a warm embrace of musk, sandalwood, leather, and amber, the final resonance that lingers long after the initial strike has faded.
Cultural impact
Since its 2021 release, Gong has become a cult favorite among indie fragrance circles, praised for its daring green‑fruit‑spice blend. The accompanying eight‑track gong‑driven album reinforces the brand’s multi‑sensory ethos, turning the scent into a soundtrack for summer outings. Wearers often cite its distinctive blueberry‑radish contrast as a conversation starter, cementing its place in niche perfumery discussions.
