The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Vaslui arrived in 2012 from JAFRA, a cosmetics and fragrance house with a catalog that leans into accessible, wear-anywhere compositions. Vaslui sits in the men's Citrus Aromatic family, a category that promises freshness but here delivers something with more backbone. The brief reads confident: bright fruit up top, warm spice in the middle, a woody base that refuses to fade politely. Red apple and bergamot open with a crisp sweetness sharpened by lemon and mandarin, a quartet that feels like biting into fruit still cool from the morning. The heart warms quickly, with cinnamon bringing a bakery-adjacent heat and Bulgarian Rose smoothing the transitions so the shift from citrus to spice doesn't jolt.
What makes Vaslui worth a second look is how it balances the citrus-aromatic template with ingredients that usually stay in separate rooms. Bulgarian Rose in the heart softens the mid-phase in a way the apple-cinnamon opening doesn't telegraph, lending a petal-like texture to a category more accustomed to synthetic freshness. Sequoia and Sandalwood in the base pull the scent into drier, woodier territory, keeping the vanilla and amber from tipping the whole thing into dessert.
The evolution
The first 15 minutes are almost aggressive in their brightness. Red apple hits sweet and sharp at the same time, bergamot and lemon cut through, and the mandarin keeps the whole thing sparkling. Wormwood adds a herbal bitterness that keeps the fruit from reading juvenile, its absinth-like edge slicing through the sweetness just enough to give the opening some teeth. Around the 30-minute mark, the citrus starts to retreat and the heart takes over. Cinnamon warms up, Bulgarian Rose softens the edges, and lily of the valley gives it a clean, almost soapy quality. Geranium keeps the floral grounded in something masculine, a slightly green, slightly peppery note that prevents the rose from floating off. Two hours in, and the base has settled into its real voice.
Cultural impact
Vaslui entered JAFRA's men's catalog in 2012, joining a roster of citrus-aromatic and oriental releases that lean into accessible, daily-wear compositions. The name itself carries a certain weight, suggesting something Eastern European, something older than the typical French or Italian naming conventions that dominate the broader fragrance market. Within JAFRA's lineup, Vaslui became known for its apple-cinnamon-cedar profile, a combination that feels familiar in structure but specific in execution.
