The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Ignis is fire. Launched by Quintesscent in 2018, it takes its name from the classical element and frames the fragrance through warmth, resin, and an old-fashioned sense of atmosphere. Rather than relying on a single dominant material, the composition builds its character through a succession of aromatic facets. Cardamom and saffron open the scent, violet and labdanum shape its middle, and the base gathers frankincense, myrrh, leather, oud, patchouli, and vetiver. Together, these notes create a warm, resinous impression with enough spice and greenery to keep the dense base from feeling static. The result is contemplative and layered, suited to taking time with the way its opening gradually gives way to a richer, darker center.
Ignis gives oud a place within a broader resinous composition instead of letting it stand as the sole point of focus. Frankincense and myrrh accompany it in the base, while leather, patchouli, and vetiver add further layers of earth, wood, and dryness. The cardamom, saffron, and rose opening brings a contrasting lift to that darker foundation. Saffron contributes a softly leathery quality, cardamom adds aromatic brightness, and rose takes on a dusty, restrained character in this context. Violet lends a powdery texture through the heart, while labdanum brings warmth and a resinous depth.
The evolution
Ignis opens with cardamom and saffron, creating a bright aromatic entrance before rose introduces a dusty floral thread. The combination feels more textured than overtly sweet, setting up the resinous materials that follow. As the opening softens, violet contributes a powdery coolness and labdanum adds amber warmth, while cedarwood gives the composition a dry structure. The fragrance then gathers greater weight through frankincense and myrrh, which bring a clear incense character. Oud adds depth, leather supplies a close, material texture, patchouli contributes an earthy facet, and vetiver introduces a dry green edge. These base notes gradually settle into a unified resin-leather-oud impression. The final drydown remains layered and close to the skin, with the warmth of labdanum and leather balanced by the drier notes of cedarwood, vetiver, and patchouli.
Cultural impact
Ignis is a resin-forward niche fragrance with a clear incense-and-leather character. Its cardamom and saffron opening adds spice and brightness, while violet, labdanum, frankincense, myrrh, oud, patchouli, vetiver, and leather create a layered path from floral and aromatic notes into a darker, more tactile base. The result rewards attention to texture and development, moving from dusty rose, powdery violet, and warm labdanum toward incense, wood, earth, and skin-worn leather. Seasonal voting also places it most strongly within the cooler part of the year.
