The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The Armis collection frames fragrance as protective wear for the psyche. Raris fits that concept perfectly, armor doesn't have to be cold. Sometimes it wraps around you like warmth, like memory, like the last hour of summer you didn't want to end.Artist Cael and perfumer Chris Maurice built Raris around an unusual pairing: the pungent oregano of Sicily against the woody, balsamic licorice of Spain. Herbal and sweet, bitter and soft. The tension between those two top notes is what sets everything else in motion. Creamy magnolia. Earthy patchouli. Vanilla pulled away from its comfort zone. The result is a scent that feels familiar at first, then quietly refuses to behave like any vanilla you've met before.
Oregano in a fragrance is a statement. Chris Maurice uses it as a structural element, not a gimmick. That green, slightly medicinal herbaceousness acts as a foil for the sweetness that follows, it keeps the vanilla honest, stops it from sliding into saccharine territory. The licorice adds aniseed depth without gourmandism, creating a bridge between the herbal opening and the warm, powdery base.Licorice also carries balsamic and woody nuances that pre-figure the cedar and sandalwood foundation. It's not just an opening note here, it's a connective tissue that makes the entire composition feel inevitable rather than assembled.
The evolution
Sicilian oregano hits first. Bright, green, a little medicinal, aromatic in the true sense of the word. Spanish licorice follows within minutes, bringing aniseed sweetness that softens the herb without neutralizing it. The opening unfolds with impressive presence, a generous display of herb and anise before the hand-off begins. Magnolia and patchouli arrive together. The floral sweetness of magnolia blooms against the earthiness of patchouli, creating a tension that feels deliberately seductive. This is the heart where the fragrance earns its reputation, neither purely sweet nor purely dark, but something suspended between the two, holding its ground with quiet intensity. Cedar, sandalwood, and vanilla arrive in the drydown and take their time. Ambergris adds a salty-animalic undertone that keeps the sweetness grounded.
Cultural impact
Raris occupies a distinctive space where unconventional note combinations create truly distinctive signatures rather than variations on a theme. The inclusion of oregano sets it apart from typical fragrance fare, while the deep vanilla provides a warm, resinous counterweight that anchors the composition. The scent's character appeals to wearers seeking bold, evening-appropriate fragrances with Mediterranean sensibility. The interplay between herb and dark vanilla generates strong opinions and occasional divisiveness, exactly what the brand seems to intend for its Armis pieces.
