The Story
Why it exists.
The original Shalimar is a temple to vanilla and the Guerlinade. This Millesime edition honors that lineage while pulling focus entirely to the flower. Three jasmine origins, Grasse, Indian, Italian, each bringing something different to the bouquet. Together they create a Jasminum grandiflorum experience that feels simultaneously plush and crisp, the kind of floral that commands attention without screaming for it. The Grasse jasmine contributes that classic powdered elegance, the Indian jasmine adds a deep, almost indolic richness that grounds the composition, while the Italian jasmine brings a bright, almost green facet that lifts the entire bouquet.

The Beginning
Grasse jasmine carries a powdery elegance that reads almost vintage. Indian jasmine sambac adds body, a denser, almost tropical warmth that stops the powder from becoming flat. Italian jasmine brings lift, a bright quality that keeps the whole heart from settling too heavily. Together, they create a jasmine that never turns indolic or animalic. Clean. Warm. The vanilla doesn't compete with the jasmine, it gives it something to land on.
The Evolution
Bergamot opens sharp and green, a quick citrus zap that clears the air. Thirty minutes in, the jasmine takes over. It doesn't arrive gently, it fills the space the bergamot left behind. The jasmine unfolds in waves, its creamy petals softened by a beeswax quality that gives the heart remarkable body. The vanilla starts to warm through as the top notes fade, creamy and sweet, almost caramel-adjacent in the way it rounds out the floral without swamping it. There's a gentle sweetness that develops in the heart that feels almost honeyed at times. The composition settles into a soft drydown where the vanilla and jasmine remain intertwined, intimate and close. The overall sillage is medium, projecting nicely in the first hour then hugging closer to the skin as time passes. The next morning, there's a faint trace on fabric, soft and sweet.
Cultural Impact
The Millesime line within Guerlain offers a different take on the house's classics. Jasmine is the star here, which positions this as a bridge between the Shalimar faithful and anyone drawn to jasmine as a focal point. The limited production and singular focus give this expression a collector appeal that the fragrance community has noticed. It reads as Guerlain pausing to showcase a single material through their specific vocabulary, pulling from their archives to highlight something exceptional. The jasmine-forward approach differs from the Guerlinade-forward house style, offering something familiar yet distinctly focused.
The House
France · Est. 1828
Guerlain stands as one of the oldest and most revered perfume houses in the world, founded in Paris in 1828 by Pierre-François-Pascal Guerlain. What began as a boutique on rue de Rivoli quickly became the preferred destination for Parisian society, attracting dandies and elegant women who sought custom-crafted fragrances. The house's influence grew to such heights that Guerlain earned the title of Official Perfumer to Napoleon III after presenting Eau de Cologne Impériale to Empress Eugénie as a wedding gift in 1853. This royal patronage marked the beginning of Guerlain's enduring association with European aristocracy, as the house went on to create fragrances for Queen Victoria and Queen Isabella II of Spain. Today, under the creative direction of Thierry Wasser, the fifth-generation perfumer, Guerlain continues to shape the landscape of fine fragrance with a portfolio spanning over 1,100 olfactory creations. The house remains headquartered at its legendary Champs-Élysées mansion, a historic monument that anchors Guerlain's position at the intersection of heritage and contemporary luxury.

The opening has the brightness of citrus and green stems, music that sparkles without being sharp. The jasmine heart is where things soften: strings that carry warmth, something that breathes. The vanilla base calls for low light, piano, voice, a slow build that never arrives too quickly.
