The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Note Vanillée Nectar arrived in 2023 as the intensified counterpart to M. Micallef's original Note Vanillée. Perfumers Geoffrey Nejman and Jean-Claude Astier took the question of what makes vanilla compelling, not just pleasant, but compelling, and built outward from there. The answer they arrived at: depth through contrast. Bright citrus at the opening, a single white floral heart, then a base that leans into bourbon vanilla's full richness rather than softening it. Rum and cognac amplify the effect, giving the vanilla something to play against. The result is a fragrance that moves from sparkling to warm without ever losing coherence.
The decision to use bourbon vanilla specifically, not a generic vanilla accord, is the structural choice that defines this composition. Bourbon vanilla carries a natural depth that gives the fragrance its foundation. Add rum and cognac, both of which contain woody, slightly bitter undertones alongside their sweetness, and the result is a sweet fragrance that never reads as simple. The jasmine heart is doing quiet work here too: it keeps the opening and drydown connected, giving the scent a continuous thread even as the character shifts from bright citrus to deep vanilla.
The evolution
The opening is citrus and mandarin, bright, clean, a little tart. It announces itself clearly, then begins to recede as the jasmine arrives. The jasmine doesn't compete with the citrus so much as absorb it, turning bright into luminous. As the fragrance develops, the vanilla, rum, and cognac are fully present, and the sandalwood is beginning to establish its creamy, close-to-skin presence. The sandalwood weaves through the composition, creating a velvety backdrop that supports the sweeter notes. The drydown is where Note Vanillée Nectar earns its reputation. On most skin types, it reads as warm amber and sandalwood with a ghost of vanilla, not a projection, but a memory of warmth on the skin. The combination creates an intimate, lingering effect that feels personal and subtle.
Cultural impact
Part of the Jewel Collection, where visual drama meets olfactory depth. Note Vanillée Nectar speaks to the wearer who wants vanilla to mean something beyond sweet, someone who appreciates the difference between a fragrance that smells expensive and one that merely costs a lot. This philosophy extends to the house's overall approach to niche perfumery.
