The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Note Vanillée was composed in 2022 by Geoffrey Nejman and Jean-Claude Astier, two perfumers who understand that vanilla, done without restraint, becomes something else entirely. The name itself announces the intention: a fragrance built around vanilla as its primary subject, not an afterthought. Bourbon vanilla, rum, cognac, these are not background notes here. They are the architecture. Jasmine arrives to soften what could have become overwhelming, a deliberate choice to keep the composition wearable rather than wallflower-loud. The result is a vanilla-forward scent that earns its gourmand label by being rich, warm, and unapologetically close to the skin.
What makes this composition unusual is the decision to place bourbon vanilla at the center rather than the base. Most vanilla fragrances treat it as a foundation, something that arrives in the drydown to smooth everything out. Here, vanilla opens and persists, supported by cognac and rum that give it an alcohol warmth distinct from pure sweetness. Jasmine bridges the gap between gourmand and elegant, preventing the fragrance from tipping entirely into comfort-food territory. Amber and sandalwood anchor everything in the drydown, ensuring the sweetness doesn't become cloying. It's a well-constructed arc: bright citrus top, soft floral heart, warm gourmand base that actually earns the name.
The evolution
The opening hits bright, mandarin and citrus fruits, a clean first impression that immediately signals warmth to come. Within fifteen to twenty minutes, jasmine arrives, softening the citrus into something quieter and more intimate. The vanilla doesn't wait to be invited. It moves in alongside the jasmine, not replacing it but layering beneath it, bourbon vanilla backed by cognac and rum, the kind of warmth that feels like it came from a glass, not a bottle. The amber and sandalwood settle by the thirty-minute mark, grounding the composition. By the second hour, the fragrance has found its rhythm: warm, close, intimate. It doesn't announce itself. It stays. Six to eight hours is typical on most skin types, fading not with a bang but slowly, becoming skin-warm rather than room-filling. The next morning, traces remain on fabric, a reminder that this one doesn't leave quickly.
Cultural impact
Note Vanillée arrived during vanilla's sustained cultural moment in perfumery, a decade-long revival driven by gourmand accords and the mainstreaming of niche fragrance aesthetics. The 2022 launch positioned the scent within a landscape already crowded with vanilla interpretations, yet the M. Micallef approach distinguished itself through the inclusion of cognac and rum, materials more commonly associated with masculine fragrance traditions. This choice reflected a broader trend of perfumers borrowing across gendered conventions, softening the line between masculine warmth and feminine sweetness.
