The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Shalimar Indes & Merveilles was born from a partnership between Guerlain and the film "La Légende de Shalimar" in 2013. The fragrance exists as an ode to the Shalimar legend, a collector's piece that would exist as much as an object of beauty as a fragrance. Only 48 bottles were made, each a collaboration with Parisian jewelry designer Sylvia Toledano. Her designs incorporate 24-karat gold, amethyst, quartz, carnelian, lapis lazuli, tiger's eye, and malachite, transforming the bottle into something you would display on a shelf or in a case rather than tuck away in a drawer. The 1.5L Extrait format means this is not a fragrance you wear lightly.
The Opoponax in the composition brings a balsamic warmth and powdery softness that amplifies the vanilla without competing for attention. Tonka bean rounds the composition into something almost edible, while iris adds an unexpected coolness that keeps the warmth from becoming heavy or overwhelming. The interplay between these materials creates a scent that feels both familiar and surprising, rooted in Guerlain's traditions but expressing them in a more concentrated, deliberate way.
The evolution
The opening announces citruses and jasmine, bright, sweet, classical Shalimar territory. Within minutes, vanilla takes over completely, not the sharp synthetic kind but something warm and almost gourmand in its sweetness. Opoponax adds its powdery signature while spices such as cinnamon and perhaps cardamom thread through the heart, adding complexity without overwhelming the vanillic foundation. By the second hour, the drydown settles into tonka bean and iris, soft, intimate, close to the skin. Patchouli and woody notes anchor everything that came before, ensuring the fragrance does not just disappear into nothingness. On fabric, it can last until the next day, leaving traces that whisper rather than shout.
Cultural impact
This fragrance exists for serious collectors who appreciate the theatricality of perfume as art object. Only 48 bottles were made, each tied to the film "La Légende de Shalimar," and the Extrait concentration, the opulent bottle, and the 1.5L format mark it as a statement piece rather than an everyday fragrance. It appeals to those who want Guerlain at its most committed to materials and craftsmanship over casual accessibility. The sheer scale and ornamentation of the bottle alone signal that this is meant to be displayed, discussed, and admired rather than simply worn out the door.
