The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Jasmin de Nuit arrived in 2005 from Céline Ellena, daughter of the house's founding perfumer Jean-Claude Ellena. The composition centers on jasmine paired with star anise, a combination that brings a cool, sharp quality to the floral warmth. Mandarin and bergamot give the opening a citrus brightness that prevents the blend from becoming overly sweet too quickly. The pairing creates an unexpected tension between the intoxicating warmth of jasmine and the aromatic coolness of star anise, and Céline built the entire structure around this contrast. The result is a fragrance that feels both floral and aromatic, with the jasmine maintaining its presence throughout while the supporting notes keep it from settling into something predictable.
What makes Jasmin de Nuit work is the way the star anise functions as a structural element rather than just a note. The anise doesn't just add an anisic edge; it provides a cool counterpoint that makes the jasmine feel more present and more vibrant against it. The cardamom and cinnamon in the heart then do something unexpected: they push the jasmine toward warmth rather than sweetness, giving it a spiced quality that keeps the floral from becoming delicate.
The evolution
The opening announces itself with mandarin and star anise, a bright, almost medicinal citrus tempered by the cool green of anise. It's the kind of contrast that makes you lean in. Within twenty minutes the jasmine takes over, dense and heady, the kind of absolute that unfolds with real presence. The cinnamon underneath begins to show itself, warm, almost dry, threading through the floral without softening it. By the second hour the cardamom has joined, adding a peppery warmth that keeps the jasmine from becoming sweet. The whole composition settles into a warm amber-sandalwood base that feels substantial and well-integrated. The drydown on fabric reveals itself as something distinct, with the jasmine continuing to show through the amber and wood notes as the composition ages, creating a finish that feels both warm and aromatic.
Cultural impact
Jasmin de Nuit holds a specific place in the niche fragrance landscape as a jasmine-forward oriental that refuses to be safe. The combination of star anise and jasmine creates something distinctive in a market full of safer choices. For those who found it, it became a signature fragrance, something worn when they wanted something that stood apart from more conventional options.
