The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Alberto Morillas built this around a single named moment: the gloaming. That threshold between when the sun drops and the streetlights haven't caught yet. It's a specific hour, not a vague idea of evening, and that specificity shapes everything about the composition. The Alchemist's Garden collection frames fragrance as personal alchemy, encouraging wearers to layer and remix. But A Gloaming Night works alone. It doesn't need help. Released in 2021 under creative direction that valued layering and customization, this one holds its own ground.
Cinnamon, vetiver, patchouli. A lean pyramid by design, not a crowded marketplace of ideas but three materials doing the work of more. The choice of vetiver as the heart note is telling: not rose, not iris, not the expected florals. Vetiver is raw, mineral, green in a dry way. It grounds the cinnamon without domesticating it. Patchouli then does what patchouli does best, it darkens. Not sweet, not dirty, not the patchouli of the 2010s boom. This is vetiver-led patchouli: the hour when the earth cools and the spice has somewhere to land.
The evolution
Cinnamon arrives first, not the aggressive spice of a kitchen drawer but something warmer, rounder, wrapped in a dry heat that opens close to the skin. As the composition develops, vetiver takes the stage. The mineral quality surfaces like wet stone in late sun. There's a greenness here, but not fresh-cut, dried, sun-warmed, the color of tall grass in October. Patchouli arrives last, and it's the tell. Not the syrupy patchouli of overly sweet fragrances. This one is woody, earthy, almost austere. As the minutes pass, it deepens and settles, dry and close, the scent of someone still in the room after they've left. The woody and mineral facets intertwine, creating a sense of completeness that feels inevitable rather than constructed.
Cultural impact
A Gloaming Night landed in 2021 as part of The Alchemist's Garden, Gucci's customizable collection built around personal alchemy. The collection encouraged layering and remix, but this fragrance holds its ground solo. It's the kind of composition that stands out in the broader Gucci fragrance range: three notes, well-chosen, executed with precision. The combination of warm spice, mineral depth, and woody dryness creates something that feels intentional rather than accidental, a fragrance that asks you to pay attention without demanding it.
