The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Alberto Morillas built Flora Gorgeous Jasmine around the jasmine sambac flower, a warm and rich variety that brings depth to the composition. Gucci had already explored the flower in Gucci Bloom, bringing gardenia into Alessandro Michele's vision. But this chapter wanted something different. Not a green, almost leafy interpretation, but one that embraced the floral's sun-drenched, almost honeyed character. The perfumer chose jasmine sambac as the anchor because of its ability to feel both delicate and substantial, a paradox that Gucci has always been comfortable exploring. The house has operated at the intersection of Italian craft and modern audacity since 1921, and Flora Gorgeous Jasmine represents the collection's softer side, femininity distilled into scent form.
The note philosophy here is one of contrast and balance. Mandarin and bergamot provide an initial brightness that prevents the floral heart from feeling heavy. Black pepper adds a surprising warmth that keeps the opening from feeling predictable. Jasmine sambac, as the dominant floral, brings richness without tipping into screechy territory. Magnolia and rose support without overwhelming, creating a heart that feels both layered and cohesive. Sandalwood, benzoin, and patchouli form a base that is warm and grounded, ensuring the fragrance lingers on skin without becoming cloying. This is a composition built for someone who loves jasmine but wants it presented with sophistication and a modern edge.
The evolution
The opening unfolds with mandarin and bergamot, two citrus materials that create an immediate sense of freshness and brightness. Black pepper follows closely, adding a subtle warmth that prepares the wearer for the floral heart to come. As the composition transitions, jasmine takes command with its characteristic richness and slight indolic edge. Magnolia enters to support with its creamy, almost creamy floralcy, and rose rounds out the bouquet with a delicate, romantic quality. This is not a quiet floral; it is lush, confident, and unapologetically feminine. The drydown reveals the base materials: sandalwood providing creamy, smooth woodiness, benzoin lending warmth and a hint of sweetness, and patchouli grounding everything with earthy depth.
Cultural impact
Flora Gorgeous Jasmine arrived as part of Gucci's continued exploration of the Flora universe. Morillas, who had already shaped Gucci Bloom, brought his experience with the collection to this new chapter. The campaign, starring Miley Cyrus, presented the fragrance as an expression of open happiness, emphasizing its vibrant floral character without pretense. The scent attracted people drawn to the house's aesthetic, finding in the fragrance a reflection of the brand's fashion identity expressed through scent.
