The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Sonia Godet crafted Folie d'Aix 1924 to mark the centenary of Hôtel Le Pigonnet in Aix-en-Provence. The hotel, a historic estate where painters, writers, and composers gathered beneath wisteria-draped terraces, has been a creative refuge since the 1920s. The fragrance translates that memory: a garden in full Provençal afternoon, herbs and flowers breathing together under a wide, hot sky. Rather than nostalgia, Godet sought to make the garden live again, to give anyone who wears it a seat at that table, a century on.
What makes Folie d'Aix 1924 stand apart is its insistence on two opposing forces coexisting. The top is all herbs and citrus, sharp, green, immediate. The heart softens but doesn't retreat; lilac and wisteria bloom against pine instead of over it, which is unusual. Most fragrances would choose: fresh and airy, OR deep and resinous. This one refuses to choose. The result is a scent that feels spacious, like standing in a garden rather than sniffing a bottle. The labdanum in the heart acts as a quiet bridge, giving the florals something warm to lean into before cedar and olive wood arrive to anchor everything.
The evolution
The opening hits immediately: rosemary, bergamot, and a whisper of lemon, green and clean, the smell of herbs crushed between fingers. Within twenty minutes, the citrus retreats and pine takes over, sharp and slightly metallic, as if the air has cooled. Then lilac and wisteria arrive, not loudly but insistently, threading through the conifer like a melody that won't stop. The jasmine and rose sit beneath, quiet but present, keeping the whole thing from going too masculine. By the third hour, cedar and olive wood have settled everything. The drydown is intimate, close to the skin, warm, faintly resinous. On fabric, it lingers until morning.
Cultural impact
Folie d'Aix 1924 arrives as a centenary tribute to Hôtel Le Pigonnet, the historic Provençal estate where artists once gathered in creative communion. Godet translates this legacy into scent, capturing the memory of a garden sanctuary in full botanical bloom. The fragrance bridges artistic heritage and olfactory craft, offering a sensory portrait of a place where creativity and nature intertwined. Its composition evokes the spirit of Provençal summers, where sun-warmed herbs and blooming florals create an atmosphere of leisurely artistic pursuit.
