Why it exists.
The beginning
Corps & Âmes, French for Bodies & Souls, arrived in 2017 from Maison Godet, a Parisian perfume house. The Godet name carries weight in French spirits, and the family's pivot into fragrance gave the house a second identity built on raw material rather than grain. Corps & Âmes sits in the brand's Travelling collection, a set of scents conceived for movement and for the kind of quiet that settles in when you're somewhere unfamiliar. The brand's own framing plays on duality: the wandering soul carried away by amber and incense while the body stays rooted in woody, green notes. It's a tension between earth and atmosphere, between staying and straying, translated into a tightly edited five-note composition. Two woods, two resins, and a single heart.
The composition refuses to sprawl. Five materials, no decorative edges. Cedarwood and sandalwood bookend patchouli at center, with frankincense and amber holding the floor. That restraint is what makes it interesting. Godet left out the usual scaffolding that holds a woody-oriental together: no vanilla to sweeten the base, no iris to lift the mid, no extra resins to bulk the drydown. What remains is a linear architecture that asks the raw materials to do all the talking, and the materials are good enough to answer.
The evolution
The first thirty minutes feel almost geological. Cedarwood and sandalwood arrive together, dry and architectural, like walking into a room paneled in raw wood. There's no citrus to soften the landing, no aromatic top to ease the transition. Just wood, and the promise of wood. Then patchouli surfaces, and the composition tilts. The dry, clean cedar gives way to something darker and moister, an earthiness that smells turned, like forest floor after rain. This is the heart of the fragrance, and it holds the floor without surrendering. The wood reads drier here, the patchouli damper, and the two materials negotiate rather than compete. As the hours pass, frankincense begins to lift off the patchouli base, carrying a smoky, slightly sweet resin note into the air around the wearer.
Cultural impact
Corps & Âmes wears like a composition built for someone who pays attention. It doesn't announce itself, doesn't try to fill a room, and rewards the wearer who leans in rather than waits for the fragrance to project. Within the woody-oriental register it occupies a quieter space, closer to the contemplative end than the opulent one, a scent that holds its shape across a long evening without ever raising its voice.
