The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The name says it all. L'Interdit, The Forbidden. The name itself carries the tension, the pull of something one shouldn't have. L'Interdit Intense, launched in 2020, revisits that founding tension, white florals against something darker. Tuberose and orange blossom bloom bright and lush, but they're soon shadowed by roasted sesame, its nutty warmth adding a gravitational depth that refuses to let the florals float away. Vetiver's earthiness and patchouli's rich, mossy character ground the composition, while a whisper of vanilla keeps the drydown warm without tipping into sweetness. The result is a fragrance that feels simultaneously delicate and daring, a balance of light and shadow that captures the essence of its name.
The trio of perfumers, Dominique Ropion, Anne Flipo, and Fanny Bal, work the contrast like a couture pleat: precise, intentional, and charged. Indian tuberose absolute brings that thick, almost lactonic creaminess. But the black sesame absolute isn't accented or whispered, it's roasted, present, woven through the heart like a dark thread. Tunisian orange blossom keeps the florals bright, but the vetiver and patchouli underneath refuse to let the whole thing go soft. The vanilla at the base isn't decorative. It's the warmth that makes you lean in.
The evolution
Black pepper opens the composition like a match struck in a dark room, brief, bright, immediate. Within minutes it recedes, and the white florals take over: tuberose first, then orange blossom. But there's something else in the heart. The sesame. Roasted, nutty, unexpected, it adds a warmth that doesn't belong to the florals alone. As the florals soften, the base notes arrive: vetiver's earthy, slightly smoky character, patchouli's depth, and finally the vanilla. The drydown is warm without being sweet, deep without being heavy. What lingers is a quiet intimacy, the scent settling close to the skin as the hours pass, evolving from a bold opening into something softer, more personal.
Cultural impact
The original L'Interdit has long been a reference point in the Givenchy fragrance wardrobe. L'Interdit Intense builds on that heritage with a composition that speaks to contemporary tastes. The opening is sharp and immediate, black pepper asserting itself before yielding to a heart of lush white florals. Tuberose takes the lead, its creamy richness softened by orange blossom, while roasted sesame introduces an unexpected warmth that deepens the bouquet. As the top notes fade, the base reveals itself through vetiver's earthy complexity, patchouli's grounded depth, and a subtle wash of vanilla that keeps the finish warm without sweetness.
