The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Fantasque arrived in 2024 as part of La Collection Particulière, Givenchy's niche line. These are fragrances built with intention, for people who know what they want. Pierre-Constantin Guéros composed it around a single, deliberate collision, a bright, modern spice opening that cools into something ancient and resinous, with frankincense and cardamom as the handshake, myrrh and rose as the conversation that follows. The name itself suggests something capricious, playful, a little unexpected. It speaks in a voice that is both confident and questioning, arriving on its own terms.
The choice of absolutes and specific oud tells you everything about the intent. This isn't a safe oriental. The Guatemala cardamom opens bright and green-licorice sharp. The Somalian frankincense brings its darker, tar-like resin character. Together they create an opening that's confrontational, it wants you to pay attention, to give it space to breathe. Then the rose and myrrh cool everything down. The Bulgarian damask rose absolute is used here as an absolute, not a fresh floral, jammy, honeyed, dry.
The evolution
Fantasque announces itself in sharp, almost jarring fashion. The opening demands attention. Cardamom cuts bright and green, frankincense smoke curls behind it, and initially this fragrance does not apologize. As the smoke softens into something less aggressive, the cardamom cools toward pepper, and the rose begins to assert itself, jammy and warm, supported by myrrh's dry resin. The handoff isn't sudden. Top notes thin while the heart builds beneath them, a gradual transition rather than a dramatic reveal. By the second hour, the rose-myrrh heart has taken over. Warm, dry, almost dusty, the quality that makes Bulgarian rose absolute different from fresh rose. The base begins its slow emergence: oud that isn't animalic or harsh but smooth and resinous, vanilla that adds creaminess rather than sweetness, Peru balsam that extends everything into a warm amber that lingers close to the skin.
Cultural impact
Fantasque joins a category of resinous, smoky orientals that prioritize depth and intimacy over fresh brightness. The 2024 release fits within Givenchy's broader use of La Collection Particulière as the house's answer to niche perfumery while maintaining the brand's couture heritage.
