The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Gallivant's creative brief for Abu Dhabi was deceptively simple: hot sand, dazzling light, a breeze from the desert. Perfumer Lucas Sieuzac translated that into a fragrance that feels like midday shade, a respite from the heat rather than the heat itself. The 2022 release opens with an aromatic coolness: clary sage, cypress, and pink pepper creating a freshness that reads as shade, as relief, as the moment before stepping back into the sun. It's a counterintuitive move for a city fragrance named for somewhere scorching. Rather than amping the heat, Sieuzac built a counterweight to it.
What makes Abu Dhabi interesting is the rosemary and orris pairing in the heart. Rosemary is typically a top-note player, its camphorated sharpness fades fast. Here, it's been positioned deeper, woven into the heart alongside geranium and orris root, where it contributes a dusty, slightly camphorated texture that amplifies the desert imagery without tipping into incense territory. The result is a heart that smells like air shimmering above hot ground, dry, mineral, and faintly medicinal. The leather in the base isn't the boozy, saddle-soap leather of a vintage jacket. It's a quiet, mineral leather, the smell of hot stone and dry earth rather than animal hide.
The evolution
The opening is the sharpest part, cypress and pink pepper arrive cool and slightly citrusy, with clary sage adding an herbal lift that prevents the top from reading as sweet. It lasts maybe thirty minutes before the herbs begin to recede and the heart takes over. The heart is where Abu Dhabi earns its name. Saffron arrives with a faintly smoky, slightly medicinal quality that deepens the dryness already established. Geranium adds a floral counterweight that keeps things from going fully austere, while orris and rosemary create a dusty, camphorated texture that amplifies the heat. This phase lasts the longest, two to four hours depending on skin chemistry. The base arrives quietly. Leather, cedar, and patchouli don't burst through the heart, they settle underneath it, adding warmth and a mineral woodiness that lingers close to the skin for the remaining hours. The sillage is moderate throughout, which means Abu Dhabi never announces itself loudly. That's the trade-off. But the drydown, warm leather and cedar worn close, is the part people come back for.
Cultural impact
Abu Dhabi stands apart within the Gallivant collection with its distinctive mineral character. The fragrance carries a sense of restraint and composure, qualities that prevent it from drifting toward the sweeter, more accessible registers that characterize many of its counterparts. There is an understated quality to the scent, a quiet confidence that makes its presence felt without announcing itself. The sillage remains close to the skin, allowing the fragrance to develop subtly throughout the day rather than projecting boldly into a room.
