The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Spring Poetry arrived in 2022 as part of FUMparFUM's Alchemist Charlatan collection. The composition opens with birch and galbanum, their crisp green notes striking an immediate fresh, slightly bitter impression. There is cucumber water in the top, a cool aquatic quality that tempers the sharper green elements. A suggestion of citrus oil adds brightness to the initial burst. As the fragrance develops, the green character persists but softens, allowing a dry vetiver note to emerge in the base. The overall impression remains fresh and green throughout wear, with the bitter facet of birch lingering gently as the scent fades. The Alchemist Charlatan label indicates this fragrance is part of a specific series within the house's offerings.
What sets Spring Poetry apart from the typical green fragrance is its refusal to flatten. Most compositions in this family either lean heavily into freshness or collapse into sweetness. Here, the birch leaf does something unusual, it introduces a slightly bitter, almost medicinal quality that keeps the jasmine from becoming precious. Marigold (tagetes, in some listings) adds a herbal edge that bridges the green opening and the warmer base. The white amber doesn't read as sweet or powdery. Instead, it provides lift, a sensation of airiness that prevents the drydown from feeling heavy or dense. The result is a fragrance that smells genuinely fresh without ever approaching 'clean laundry' territory.
The evolution
The opening hits immediately with green leaves, not the sharp citrus-green of a cologne, but something earthier, more grounded. Think crushed stems rather than peeled fruit. Within the first hour, jasmine makes its entrance, joined by the marigold and birch leaf. The birch is the tell here: it adds a faint bitterness, almost tannic, that stops the floral heart from going soft. Six hours in, patchouli and vetiver take over. The white amber provides a quiet warmth without sweetness. On fabric, the musk in the base extends the drydown by another few hours, a faint green-woody trace that lingers until the next wash.
Cultural impact
Spring Poetry sits within the Alchemist Charlatan collection alongside works like Blur and Thyme. The scent opens with a distinctive fresh-green character that immediately sets it apart from conventional fragrance expectations. Birch provides a sharp, crisp quality while galbanum adds aromatic intensity and a slight bitterness. Cucumber water introduces a cool, watery dimension that keeps the composition surprisingly light. The dry down reveals vetiver, its earthy root character grounding the brighter top notes without losing the fragrance's essential freshness.
