The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Fragrance Du Bois is a Paris fragrance house founded in 2013, built around sustainably sourced oud from certified Southeast Asian plantations. The house pairs the deep, resinous character of the wood with bright florals and gourmand accords, making refined scents with real presence. Shadi Samra built New York 5th Avenue around the idea of urban sophistication. The brief called for rose and bergamot to open bright and clean, a heart of cypriol and violet to add complexity, and cashmere wood as the signature finish.
The pairing of rose with bergamot in the opening creates a fresh, modern aesthetic that feels both classic and contemporary. The cypriol in the heart adds a layer of depth that prevents the fragrance from feeling too sweet, while the caramel brings warmth that makes the violet feel softer and more inviting. Cashmere wood and guaiac wood in the drydown provide a signature warmth that grounds the entire composition, making this a fragrance that feels both refined and approachable.
The evolution
The scent unfolds in three movements. First, bergamot and rose create an immediate elegant impression. Second, cypriol brings an earthy, smoky quality that prevents the composition from becoming purely sweet. Violet adds a powdery softness, and caramel introduces warmth that bridges the opening to the drydown. Third, cashmere wood and guaiac wood provide a creamy, slightly smoky base. Musk ensures longevity, and vanilla adds a gentle sweetness that rounds out the experience.
Cultural impact
New York 5th Avenue lands within a specific tradition of city-inspired fragrances that aim to capture a feeling rather than a location. The Fashion Capitals collection places it alongside compositions named for cities, each built around a different urban character. What sets this one apart is the restraint in the drydown. The sweetness is real but not aggressive. The woody base earns its keep. Wearers describe it as the scent of someone who walks into a room and doesn't need to announce themselves.
