The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Topkapi Palace draws its name from the famous seat of Ottoman power perched above the Bosphorus, a landmark that has come to represent the weight and reach of empire. Eyüp Sabri Tuncer released this scent in 2015 as part of a growing catalogue of fragrances tied to Istanbul landmarks, sitting alongside Hagia Sophia, the Basilica Cistern, and the Grand Bazaar. The fragrance opens with a bold, spiced character built around cumin, cinnamon, and masala chai, immediately establishing a presence that demands attention. As the hours pass, white florals like jasmine and rose emerge through carrot seed's earthy sweetness, softening the spice without dulling it. The dry down settles into a resinous blend of sandalwood, oud, benzoin, and white musk, close and warm against the skin.
Masala chai is an unusual opening for an oriental. Most houses reach for saffron or cardamom first, the standard issue. Here, the brand chose a spiced tea accord, which reads as domestic warmth before grand statement. Cumin sharpens it further, a note that polarizes because it teeters between savory and unclean depending on dose. The heart pulls back toward florals, jasmine and ylang-ylang with rose and carrot seed adding a vegetal sweetness that keeps the florals from turning soapy. Then oud and sandalwood in the base, which ground everything in something heavier than the opening promises. The contrast is the composition's whole argument.
The evolution
The first 30 minutes are almost aggressive. Cinnamon hits fast, masala chai follows close behind, and cumin threads through everything with an intensity that sets the tone for the hours ahead. The composition announces itself with a bold, spiced character built around cumin, cinnamon, and masala chai, immediately establishing a presence that demands attention. The jasmine and rose don't fully arrive until around the 90-minute mark, at which point the spice recedes just enough for the florals to breathe. Carrot seed adds an earthy sweetness here that keeps the white florals from going powdery, lending a grounded warmth to the heart. By hour three or four, the base takes over, and this is where the scent deepens into something quietly compelling. Sandalwood, oud, benzoin, and white musk settle into something close, warm, and resinous.
Cultural impact
Topkapi Palace wears as a warm-spicy oriental in the classical sense, leaning hard into its cumin signature from the first spray. The opening pairs that cumin with cinnamon and masala chai, building a dense, almost heady top that fills the air around the wearer. As the hours pass, jasmine and rose surface through carrot seed's earthy sweetness, softening the spice without flattening it. By the time the base arrives, sandalwood, oud, benzoin, and white musk settle into something close, warm, and resinous against the skin.
