The beginning
Belle Lã arrived in 2019 from Eudora, carrying a composition that promises something warm to wrap around yourself, textured enough to feel deliberate. The name hints at softness with structure, and the juice reads exactly that way: a dense, layered thing that doesn't want to be rushed past. Fanny Grau and Eurico Mazzini built it as an Oriental Floral, anchoring a generous bouquet of rose, jasmine, iris and violet over a base of amber, powder and cotton candy. The pink pepper and blackcurrant up top keep it from drifting into softness it can't earn, lending a sharp, almost cold fruit-and-spike contrast to the warmer notes waiting underneath. There's a deliberateness to how the notes stack, each one pulling weight, none of them background. You can smell the architecture.
The interesting move here is the pairing of cotton candy with iris powder and rose, a combination that could collapse into something cloying if the perfumers hadn't anchored the top with the sharp fruit-and-spike of blackcurrant and pink pepper. Iris does the heavy lifting in the middle, lending a cool, slightly metallic dryness that keeps the sweetness honest. There's a balancing act happening at every stage: the candy wants to dominate, the powder wants to flatten, and the pepper wants to overwhelm. Nothing gets its way completely.
The evolution
The first ten minutes are almost aggressive: blackcurrant and pink pepper arrive at the front, fruit-forward with a bite that reads almost like cold wine, prickling at the back of the nose. Then the rose blooms, and the composition shifts register. Jasmine and iris powder the heart into something denser, the violet underneath lending a darker, slightly bruised sweetness that keeps the bouquet from collapsing into innocence. The cotton candy in the base doesn't show up where you'd expect. It waits, turning the drydown warm and faintly gourmand, an almost skin-like sweetness that softens everything that came before it.
