The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Instance arrived in 2020 with a single intention: make daily fragrance feel effortless. Benjamin Belizon built the composition around pear and raspberry opening the story, mandarin keeping it light. The heart brings white florals. Vanilla and sandalwood anchor the base. The fragrance wears close, the kind of scent that lingers without announcing itself. It's the fragrance for someone who thinks about scent as part of their routine, not a statement about who they are.
The fruity top notes introduce the florals. Jasmine and freesia arrive in the heart, supported by plum. The vanilla-sandalwood base warmth without weight. Each layer builds on the last without overwhelming. The fragrance has to feel like something you'd reach for without thinking, not a commitment, but a habit worth keeping.
The evolution
The opening is pear and mandarin. Raspberry underneath adds a slight tartness that keeps it from becoming saccharine. Within twenty minutes, the white florals take over: freesia first, then jasmine. The plum in the heart adds body without sweetness. Then the base arrives. Vanilla and sandalwood settle close to the skin, creating warmth that lasts. The iris flower adds a powdery finish that lingers through the drydown. On most skin types, expect four to six hours of wear with moderate sillage, present enough to be noticed by someone leaning in, never overwhelming a room.
Cultural impact
Instance launched in 2020, a period when the fragrance market was shifting toward personalized, everyday scents over statement fragrances. The launch reflects a broader cultural move toward accessibility and versatility, filling a gap for consumers who want something wearable yet distinctive. Its fruity-floral profile with warm vanilla undertones offered an alternative to both overly sweet mass-market options and intimidating luxury scents. The mid-range positioning with premium presentation made it appealing to younger consumers entering the fragrance world.
