The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
ESSNCE launched its Originals collection as a deliberate break from the pack. No more riffing on famous fragrances, no more dupe territory. Keep it Fruity was among the first to emerge from this mandate: original from scratch, original in spirit. The brief was simple on paper, fruity, floral, exuberant, but the team wanted something that wouldn't exhaust itself in the first hour. Too many fruity fragrances spike bright and crash hard. The challenge was building a composition that stayed interesting as it evolved, that had somewhere to go after the opening sweetness.
The answer lay in the heart-floral and its unexpected cocoa thread. Turkish rose carries more weight than peony here, it brings a slightly powdery, intentional elegance that prevents the middle from reading purely sweet. Cocoa doesn't dominate, but it adds a warm, almost bitter undertone that balances the red berries and lychee above it. Patchouli in the base does what patchouli does: it grounds the whole thing, pulls sweetness back toward earth, and extends the drydown into something that lasts closer to six hours than two. Vanilla softens the landing without making it soft.
The evolution
The opening hits fast. Bergamot and ginger arrive together, a bright, almost sharp citrus spark that reads more cool than warm. Lychee follows within seconds, bringing its translucent, slightly watery tropical sweetness. Red berries add a rounder berry note that softens the ginger's heat. By the time you reach the fifteen-minute mark, the citrus has receded and the florals have taken the stage. Peony opens soft, almost powdery, before Turkish rose arrives with more structure. The cocoa is present from the start but becomes more obvious here, threading through the rose and keeping the florals from going fully girlish. The drydown strips away the brightness entirely. Patchouli and vanilla remain, warm, close, intimate. The fruity-floral exuberance that opened the composition settles into something quieter. Four to six hours on most skin, fading gently rather than disappearing.
Cultural impact
The fruity-floral category is crowded. Most options skew safe, mass-appealing, forgettable. ESSNCE's approach treats this space as a starting point rather than a destination, the brand's laboratory positioning means even a fruity-floral can have something to say. Keep it Fruity earns attention by pairing lychee and red berries with cocoa and patchouli, adding depth that separates it from the predictable mall fragrance.
