The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Mx. came from a specific brief: make something Eris Parfums could call its own within the spicy-woody category. The opening hits with clean heat from ginger, sharp black pepper that lingers without overwhelming, and saffron's metallic brightness that adds dimension rather than sweetness. Ethiopian frankincense provides a subtle smoky counterpoint that grounds the opening without softening it. As the top notes settle, the composition reveals its complexity, the warm creaminess of sandalwood emerges alongside Virginia cedar, while the darker materials begin to surface. The result is a fragrance that reads as sophisticated from the first spray but reveals its edge over hours, the animalic presence building slowly and staying close to the skin. That's the origin.
What makes Mx. structurally interesting is how it earns the animalic. Castoreum and birch tar provide the foundation that holds the other elements together. Without them, the composition would be a pleasant spicy-wood. With them, it becomes something with genuine depth and presence that evolves across the wear. The cacao in the base adds dark, barely-sweet bitterness. The benzoin wraps everything in resinous warmth. The ginger and saffron open the experience, drawing you in with their brightness, while the darker base materials build over time to create something that holds your attention.
The evolution
The opening leads with ginger's clean heat, black pepper's bite, saffron's metallic edge. Ethiopian frankincense arrives with a whisper of smoke, tempering the brightness without softening it. As the top notes settle, the heart emerges with Australian sandalwood and Virginia cedar, creamy and warm, the spice notes receding to let the wood speak. Then the base arrives. Cacao introduces a dark, barely-sweet bitterness. Benzoin wraps everything in resinous warmth. The castoreum surfaces, animalic, close to the skin. Birch tar lingers as a smoky undercurrent that persists long after the top notes have gone. Patchouli and vetiver keep it grounded, adding earthiness and weight that extends the wear significantly.
Cultural impact
Mx. occupies a distinctive space in the niche fragrance world with its combination of animalic depth and woody warmth. The castoreum and birch tar give it a character that stands apart from more conventional constructions. It's the kind of fragrance that demonstrates what Eris Parfums is capable of.
