Fougère Mercurielle

What separates this composition is the peppermint. That note does not sit politely at the top. It cuts through the cardamom, sharpens the citron, and refuses to vanish when the heart arrives, and you can feel it threading through the rose and chamomile like a cool undercurrent. The Roman chamomile in the middle is unusual too, bringing an apple-skin calm that gives the heart a quiet, almost edible softness, the sort of note that rounds out the herbal sharpness and keeps things from getting too austere.

The evolution

The first ten minutes are all peppermint, cold and clean, almost like toothpaste that grew up and went to art school. Cardamom warms the edges while citron keeps things bright. Somewhere around the twenty-minute mark, the rose shows up, but it does not arrive alone. Neroli lifts it into something sunnier, and the Roman chamomile softens everything into a kind of green lull. That floral herbal phase runs for a few solid hours. Then the base takes over, and this is where the fougère tradition reasserts itself. Atlas cedar has a dry, pencil-shaving character. Bourbon vetiver adds smoke and root. Oakmoss ties it all together with that earthy, forest-floor dampness. The drydown sticks around for hours, quiet but present, close to the skin. On fabric the next morning, you get cedar and a ghost of rose.
