The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
EAUSO VERT builds its fragrances around the un/familiar, the space where what you recognize meets what surprises you, and Joga is no exception. Perfumer Pascal Gaurin worked with this framework to create a composition that performs the same balancing act: familiar materials arranged in unfamiliar proportions. The fragrance doesn't gesture toward a specific place or memory. Gaurin's structure starts with the bright and green, moves through warmth and complexity, and ends grounded. It's a classic arc, but the specific materials, turmeric and mate in the heart, jasmine sambac and white amber in the base, keep it from feeling rehearsed.
Turmeric brings an earthy, slightly medicinal warmth that sits between ginger and cardamom on the spice spectrum, bitter enough to feel grown-up, warm enough to feel inviting. Mate, derived from the yerba mate plant, delivers a green, smoky, tea-like quality that reads as herbal without being medicinal. Together, they create something that sounds like it shouldn't work but does. The interplay between these two materials defines the heart of the fragrance, their combined effect greater than either could achieve alone.
The evolution
The opening announces itself with crisp intention. Petitgrain and bergamot arrive together, bitter citrus and bright fruit, followed immediately by the aromatic punch of Guatemalan cardamom. The French blackcurrant adds a dark, slightly tart undertone that prevents the citrus from reading as lightweight. Green and bright and clean. Then the heart takes over and things get interesting. The turmeric emerges as the bridge, its earthy warmth threading between the fading citrus and the arriving spices. Mate adds a smoky, herbal quality that reads as green but feels complex, like the smell of a room where someone's been drinking tea for hours. Black pepper provides an aromatic lift, and magnolia begins its slow arrival, creamy and white, softening the edges of the warmer materials. The drydown is where Joga completes its arc.
Cultural impact
Joga arrived in 2022 as part of EAUSO VERT's fragrance collection. The turmeric and mate combination creates an herbal quality that distinguishes it from more conventional warm spicy fragrances, while the petitgrain and bergamot opening establishes a clarity that persists through the drydown. The scent offers something different for wearers seeking alternatives to mainstream fragrance profiles.
