The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The Be Electric collection arrived in 2016 with a single mission: capture the electric pulse of New York City nights. Three limited editions, Citrus Pulse, Bright Crush, and Loving Glow, each channeling a different frequency of the city's energy. Loving Glow drew from the warmth of city lights seen from above, the glow of a skyline at 2am, the feeling of being part of something larger and alive. Donna Karan's New York has always been about urban electricity, and this limited edition brought that voltage into scent form.
What makes Loving Glow interesting is its restraint within sweetness. The grape and pineapple could easily tip into candy territory, but the blackcurrant keeps things just tart enough to feel real. Apricot and jasmine in the heart add depth without heaviness, and the violet presence, which shows up early and stays late, is the thread that holds everything together. It's fruity-sweet, yes, but the powdery violet backbone gives it a sophistication that keeps it from reading as juvenile. This is fruit that grew up in the city.
The evolution
The opening hits fast and bright, grape and pineapple burst with sweet juiciness, blackcurrant adding a tart counter-note that keeps the sweetness honest. Within minutes, the pineapple softens and the apricot emerges, sweeter and more rounded. The violet appears early too, threading through the heart alongside jasmine's subtle warmth. By the 2-3 hour mark, vanilla takes over the base while amberwood provides structure underneath. Musk keeps everything intimate, close to the skin. The violet never fully disappears, it lingers as a quiet signature through the drydown, 4-6 hours on most skin, fading softly rather than vanishing abruptly.
Cultural impact
Limited editions often feel like cash-grabs, but the Be Electric collection had a point of view. Inspired by neon lights and New York nightlife, these fragrances captured a specific energy, late nights, bright lights, the feeling of the city at 2am. The neon-pink packaging was intentional, a callback to 80s aesthetics that were re-entering the cultural conversation in 2016. Loving Glow stands out for its balance: sweet enough to feel celebratory, powdery enough to feel romantic, moderate enough to feel wearable.
