The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Part of Dolce&Gabbana's exclusive Velvet Collection, which began in 2011, Velvet Cypress arrived in March 2017 as a declaration of contrasts. The collection had already explored warmth and sweetness in various forms. This one went the other direction, toward green, toward cool, toward something unexpected. The idea was to take the freshness everyone expects from a summer scent and give it a structural quality, something with edges and angles rather than soft edges. The result is a fragrance that feels intentional and precise, where each element has a defined role in the composition. It's the kind of scent that makes you reconsider what a warm-weather fragrance can be, shifting from simple brightness to something with actual complexity and intention.
What makes this structure unusual is the combination of cypress absolute with clary sage absolute. Cypress brings that sharp, slightly balsamic evergreen character, a greenness that feels resolved and clean. Clary sage adds a herbaceous, slightly sweet counterpoint that prevents the composition from going sharp or medicinal. Together, they create a green heart that actually has depth, a combination that feels both modern and timeless. The Sicilian lemon in the top is bright but not disposable, it exists to frame the cypress, not to overpower it.
The evolution
The opening arrives quickly, a bright citrus that announces itself without hesitation. Sicilian lemon and bergamot arrive together, neither one dominant. For the opening minutes, the citrus takes center stage, clean and direct. Then the cypress begins to assert itself, growing in presence as the citrus settles. It arrives with a quiet confidence, a green quality that builds gradually rather than overwhelming. The galbanum adds a slight bitterness, a green undertone that adds complexity. The clary sage smooths the transition, keeping the green from becoming harsh or one-dimensional. By the second hour, the composition has settled into its woody core, Virginia cedar doing the work, with cypress still present underneath. This is where the fragrance earns its name, in the way the evergreen note persists alongside the wood.
Cultural impact
Velvet Cypress joined a lineage of cypress-forward Italian compositions alongside Armani Privé Cypress Pantelleria and Acqua di Parma Cipresso di Toscana. The addition of clary sage sets it apart, an herbal lift that prevents the green from going dark or smoky. It's a distinctive combination that gives the fragrance its own identity within this category. The fragrance offers something for those who appreciate green compositions but want more than the typical fresh scent, a piece with actual depth and character that stands apart from simpler offerings.
