The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Atkinsons, founded in 1799, built its reputation on fragrances that marry aristocratic heritage with bohemian daring. The iconic chained bear symbolises the house's fearless English spirit, a lineage of boldness that Benoist Lapouza was tasked with capturing in 2015. Calling on a perfumer who could honour the brand's historic weight while introducing mineral precision, the house created The Excelsior Bouquet as a contemporary interpretation of its legacy. Lapouza layered aldehydic brightness with flintstone minerality and grapefruit's sharp citrus, establishing a structure that moves confidently from vintage elegance to modern edge.
The choice of aldehydes and flintstone reflects a deliberate rejection of conventional citrus conventions. Grapefruit provides immediate impact, but the mineral note elevates the opening beyond mere freshness. In the heart, sage and Sichuan pepper work tog ether to create a spicy yet clean impression, while nutmeg adds warmth without sweetness. The drydown's vetiver and leather ground the fragrance in earthiness, with tonka bean softening the edges just enough. This is a structure built for those who appreciate nuance within boldness, where each note has room to contribute without overwhelming the whole.
The evolution
The opening establishes aldehydic sparkle immediately, sharpened by grapefruit zest and anchored by flintstone's dry mineral quality. This mineral note prevents the citrus from reading as straightforward, instead creating an impression of mineral water touched with electricity. The heart develops through sage's herbal stillness, joined by Sichuan pepper's clean tingle and nutmeg's warm spice. Each material occupies its space without crowding, the sage providing clarity while the spices add complexity. The drydown shifts to vetiver's earthy presence, leather's structured character, and tonka bean's quiet sweetness, completing an arc that moves from brightness through complexity to grounded warmth.
Cultural impact
Since its 2015 release, The Excelsior Bouquet has been embraced by wearers who appreciate a fragrance that balances sharp mineral clarity with warm leather depth. Its distinctive flintstone note often sparks conversation, positioning it as a conversation‑starter among niche enthusiasts. The scent sits comfortably alongside other modern British creations, reinforcing Atkinsons’ reputation for daring, unapologetically English perfumery that refuses to blend into the background.
