Why it exists.
The beginning
On July 21, 2021, Daniel Josier suffered a heart attack. After days of convalescence, the perfumer turned to his craft to process the experience. Signature Heart Attack, released in 2023, is the result: a fragrance built not around an image but around a medical event, charted in three movements. The tripartite pyramid mirrors the three phases of his illness, from the sudden sharp onset through hospitalization to the slow recovery at home. Each layer of the composition maps to a chapter of that arc, making the bottle less a luxury object than a sensory memoir. The opening hits like a jolt: bright aldehydes, mandarin orange, lime, and green pear give way to a sharper current of chili and pepper that stings the nose.
The structure is what makes this more than a personal exercise. Josier assigned the opening to the moment of crisis: aldehydes, pepper, mandarin orange, lime, chili, and green pear hit with the disorienting brightness of an adrenaline spike. The heart notes map the clinical middle, cypress, sage, and frankincense carrying the smoky, incense-heavy gravity of a hospital corridor. Then cedar, musk, sandalwood, and patchouli form the return to self, the warm, grounded recovery. The accord profile confirms it: fresh, citrus, spicy, fruity, woody.
The evolution
The first ten minutes are electric. Aldehydes flash cold, then lime and mandarin cut through with a sharp, almost metallic brightness. Pepper and chili thread underneath, adding heat without sweetness. Green pear sits briefly at the edges, giving the opening a slightly bruised-fruit sweetness that doesn't last. By the thirty-minute mark, the citrus is already retreating and the heart is arriving. Cypress leads, dry and resinous, followed by sage and frankincense. This is the incense phase: smoky, meditative, with a faint medicinal quality that echoes the hospitalization metaphor without being literal. The frankincense dominates here. Around the three-hour mark, the base settles in. Cedar and sandalwood provide warmth, patchouli adds an earthy depth, and musk smooths everything together.
Cultural impact
Signature Heart Attack draws its premise from a documented medical event, and the directness of that framing sets a particular tone. Rather than evoking a place, a person, or an abstract mood, the composition charts the arc of an illness in three distinct phases, from onset through hospitalization to recovery. The pyramid structure gives wearers a clear narrative to follow from the first spray to the final drydown, and that structural clarity shapes how the fragrance reads.
