The beginning
Perfumer Nadège Le Garlantezec designed Vetiver Forte with a specific mission: create a vetiver that refuses to behave. Released in 2016, the fragrance takes a bold and distinctive approach. Here, the Haitian vetiver Orpur commands attention rather than taking a supporting role. It doesn't wait for permission. The opening hits with a cascade of Mediterranean brightness, bergamot and lemon sharpened by cardamom and nutmeg, but the real statement arrives in the drydown, where the vetiver's smoky, mineral character dominates the warm woods beneath it. This is vetiver as protagonist, not supporting cast.
What makes the composition unusual is the timing of the vetiver's entrance. The Haitian vetiver Orpur pushes through the lavender and clary sage heart with an almost confrontational clarity, smoky, mineral, with a dirty-earth quality that transforms the surrounding cashmeran and guaiac wood into something less gentle. The nutmeg and cardamom in the opening aren't just there for warmth; they're scaffolding, building a structure sturdy enough to hold the vetiver's weight. The tobacco heart provides softness in the middle act, but it's a brief respite before the mineral dryness returns and stays.
The evolution
The opening is all brightness and bite. Bergamot and lemon hit sharp and clean, the kind of citrus that wakes you up before you're ready. Shortly after, the lavender and clary sage arrive, softening everything into something herbal and almost medicinal. Smoky and mineral, with that characteristic dirty-earth quality that Haitian vetiver carries. The guaiac wood beneath it goes warm and slightly sweet, but the vetiver dominates, pulling the composition in an earthier direction than the opening suggested. The cashmeran adds a soft, almost powdery warmth that keeps the base from becoming harsh.

Vetiver Forte occupies an interesting space in the aromatic-woody category, sharing DNA with classic masculine fragrances yet positioning itself differently through its unconventional use of vetiver. The perfumer's own description of this as 'elegant and seductive with a touch of audacity' speaks to a fragrance that prioritizes complexity and mineral character over more predictable trajectories.
