Why it exists.
The beginning
Velvet Flora arrived in 2016, a year after Clean made its name with Skin, a transparent eau de parfum that mimicked the scent of freshly washed skin and redefined what minimalism could smell like. Where Skin stripped everything back, Velvet Flora built something richer. Perfumer Steven Claisse seemed to ask: what happens when you take the Clean ethos and add a second layer?
The white florals here don't stay delicate. They're warmed by saffron sitting beneath them, not above. Jasmine and lily unfold with creaminess, but the saffron adds a honeyed, slightly animalic richness that keeps the florals from reading as innocent. Cedar grounds the composition, giving the softness somewhere to land. It's a resolved contradiction: velvet softness and floral brightness, held up by something woody and earthy beneath.
The evolution
The opening catches you off guard. Bergamot sparkles bright and cool, like sunlight on glass, a quick citrus flash that doesn't linger. Then the florals arrive. Jasmine and lily together, their sweetness tempered by the saffron beneath them, which lends a warmth that borders on animalic without crossing into territory that would make you second-guess. The florals hold court for a good long while, two to three hours, before cedar begins to assert itself in the drydown. The wood note isn't soft here, it's dry, slightly sharp, the kind that scratches just enough. Patchouli adds an earthy, almost mushroom depth. Moss gives a dark green undertone. The amber and musk wrap everything in warmth, skin-like and close. Six to eight hours on most skin. The sillage stays moderate throughout, never demanding the room's attention. What remains the next morning is a quiet warmth on fabric, noticed only when fabric gets close.
Cultural impact
Velvet Flora sits in Clean Reserve, the house's collection of slightly more complex compositions. Where the main line leans into pure minimalism, Reserve gives those drawn to Clean something with more layers to discover. The warm florals and earthy base add character that the house's cleaner offerings lack, appealing to wearers who want Clean's restraint with more to find.
