Heritage
A house, in its own words
Clean was founded in 2003 by Randi Shinder, a former public‑relations executive who wanted to translate the clean‑line aesthetic of contemporary design into fragrance. The first public launch arrived in 2016 with Skin, a transparent eau de parfum that mimics the scent of freshly washed skin and quickly earned a reputation for its understated elegance. The following year the brand introduced Warm Cashmere, a soft, powdery blend that captured the comforting feel of a cashmere sweater on a cool evening. In 2017 Clean expanded its portfolio with Skin & Vanilla Eau Fraîche, a lighter take on the original Skin formula, and the warm, inviting Warm Cashmere variant. 2018 saw the release of Nude Santal & Heliotrope and Sweetbriar & Moss, both of which explored richer, botanical territories while retaining the brand’s hallmark clarity. Summer Sun arrived in 2015, offering a bright, citrus‑driven scent that became a seasonal favorite. The house continued to innovate with Sueded Oud in 2016, a restrained take on the traditionally heavy oud note, and White Fig & Bourbon in 2019, a playful juxtaposition of fig sweetness and bourbon warmth. Most recently, Malibu Beach (2024) introduced a breezy marine accord that evokes the California coastline, reinforcing Clean’s commitment to translating everyday experiences into scent. Throughout its two‑decade history Clean has remained independent, operating out of New York while collaborating with established fragrance houses for formulation and production. The brand’s growth has been marked by a steady cadence of releases rather than headline‑grabbing campaigns, allowing it to cultivate a loyal following among consumers who value subtlety and consistency. Clean’s creative vision rests on the belief that fragrance should feel as natural as the skin itself. The brand describes its approach as a pursuit of purity, aiming to strip away unnecessary complexity and let the core ingredients speak. This philosophy translates into a preference for transparent compositions that avoid heavy sillage, instead offering a close‑range aura that blends with the wearer’s own scent. Clean emphasizes ingredient integrity, favoring materials that are hypoallergenic, cruelty‑free and, where possible, sustainably sourced. The house often works with perfumers who share a minimalist mindset, encouraging them to explore the quiet potential of single‑note or dual‑note structures. Marketing language is deliberately restrained; the brand lets the fragrance speak for itself, trusting that the subtle elegance of a scent like Skin will resonate without exaggerated claims. Clean also positions its products as daily rituals, encouraging users to incorporate fragrance into ordinary moments rather than reserving it for special occasions. This everyday focus aligns with the brand’s broader value of accessibility, offering premium‑quality scents at price points that remain approachable for a wide audience.
